In mid-June, 2001, the client approached Strega to take over the installation of a one-kilometer pipeline of 18-inch steel pipe in soft clay conditions. The previous contractor had failed, and the deadline for completion was July 12. There were a number of challenges with this project, in addition to the fast approaching deadline. First, the project required communication and coordination with many layers of stakeholders and subcontractors. And secondly, many of the project consultants worried that a D80 x 100 drill rig was not powerful enough to pull the size and length of pipe in soft clay conditions.

Strega reviewed the engineering work, made some minor changes, and spent the next couple of weeks talking with all the stakeholders in the project. By maintaining constant communication with the client and stakeholders, Strega was able to build rapport and teamwork. To resolve the technical concerns, Strega worked closely with a mud-mixing consultant to develop a bentonite mixture that would stabilize the walls of the bore holes during drilling and prevent collapse. Despite the short time frame and technical challenges, Strega successfully completed the last pull of 470-meters on the morning of July 12.
