Our third pilot hole using the ParaTrack II guidance system has been completed.
The crossings involve drilling parallel to and across an existing 42" steel gas pipeline. Because of the close proximately to the existng pipeline and the depth of the pilot hole, traditional walkover guidance would have struggled to locate the drill path. The ParaTrack II effortlessly completed the pilot holes without incident. |

The company has just completed it largest
contract to date. Between August 2005 and August 2006 Strega installed a
total of 25,124 metres of 6 inch steel fiber optic conduit on the Sai
Noi North/South Bangkok power plant pipeline project. Strega was
subcontracted to Nacap Asia Pacific to complete the FOC HDD works. "It
has been a good project for us" says John Barton, Managing Director of
Strega. "This project has set a number of accomplishments for the
company. Our longest crossing of 1,100 metres was achieved on this job
using our Vermeer D80, a 40 tonne machine, something that quite a few
people said would be impossible. By paying attention to a number of
factors we were able to easily do over 1,000 metres at four locations."

Strega was recently awarded a contract to install two 24 inch and one 12
inch steel fuel pipes under the new Suvarnabhumi Airport runways. Each
24 inch pipe will have a length of approximately 66 metres and the 12
inch will be approximately 32 metres long. Due to concerns of damage to
the new runways Strega has elected to use pipe ramming instead of HDD as
the method to install the two pipes. A 16 inch and 5 3/4 inch Hammerhead
mole will be used to install the pipes.

To increase
the directional drilling locating capabilities,
Strega has just taken delivery of the new DCI SST
locating system. The new system uses a wireline
to send the the drillhead information to the drill
operator. Unlike older systems, SST system does
not need the locater operator to be directly above
the drillhead to receive information from the transmitter.
With the new SST Strega now has the capability
to complete difficult crossings such as roads and
wide rivers with better accuracy and confidence.

Strega has
purchased a Vermeer D16 x 20a directional boring
machine to expand its capability for smaller jobs.
The D16 x 20a NAVIGATOR is a powerful, small machine.
It will allow Strega to more easily drill in small,
congested spaces, such as across busy roads and
highways in the city.
“Three years ago, we
started out as a big drill contractor, but we are
now expanding our range to provide greater service
to our customers. The D16 allows us to do some
of the smaller, shorter work for our customers
that we couldn’t do physically or cost-effectively
with a large drill,” says
John Barton, Managing Director. |
